The Impact of Trauma and Violence on the Health of Northern Nigerian Women in America
Arewa Women Commission is convening a Commission of experts to examine existing knowledge and practices related to trauma and violence among Northern Nigerian Women in America. This Commission will serve under the leadership TBA of Minority Health.
Objectives and Activities
The overarching objective of this Commission is to raise awareness about issues of violence and trauma as they relate to women from the northern part of Nigeria living in the US, and to improve health outcomes for these women by generating trauma-informed policy recommendations.
Commission activities:
- To examine existing knowledge about trauma, violence and the health of these women;
- To consider ways in which the public health and health care systems can better address the effects of violence and trauma on this population;
- To document the work of the Commission and its recommendations for home government and US policy makers.

Women's eNews announces today its 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2009: one man and 20 women dedicating their lives to improving the well-being of all women and girls. They take their work into schools, board rooms, legislative chambers and beyond.

Free Blood Pressure Screening Event!
Free blood pressure screening at a polling station in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. The event was organized by Mr. Gideon Yakubu our AWC representative in Maiduguri on April 9, 2011 during the general elections with the help of some nurse volunteers.

Breast Cancer Awareness Program in Okene, Kogi State, June 2011.
AWC participated in the 3-day Breast Cancer Awareness campaign held in
Okene; Kogi State. The event was organized by AWC member; Hajiya
Habiba Salami for Initiative For Brest Cancer Awareness. The inspiring
event honored breast cancer survivors, raised awareness with cross
community walk and the event ended with lectures on breast cancer
prevention; self examination, mammogram and healthy eating.

At the June convention in Washington DC, AWC members held a meeting (SEE PICTURE BELOW) to organize the next event which will take place in Lassa, Borno State, Nigeria under the supervision of Dr. Badia and Nurse Hajara. The event will feature health education and free blood pressure and diabetic screenings. Please call the following individuals if you would like to donate any related supplies and materials. JULY 2011 ACTIVITY (RANO-KANO STATE)
on July 30, 2011, AWC members devotedly served Rano community by volunteering their expertise, valuable time and effort to participate in Free Clinical Consultation, held at the palace of Alhaji Tafida Ila; the district chief of Rano.
OUTCOME The large number of attendees that turned out for the event greatly benefited from the various services rendered by our great team. Screening tests including blood pressure, blood glucose and blood cholesterol were offered at the consultation. Also, a variety of medical issues were addressed ranging from routine healthy checkups, such as simple colds, skin rashes, back pain and upset stomachs to more serious medical problems such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and dehydration. Free medications, vitamins, toiletries and health-education materials were distributed to attendees and referrals for subspecialty care were also issued.
AWC is also experimenting on "House Call"
We will also like to extend our outreach efforts to women in purdah and those too weak with ailment and who are homebound.

AWC at the 38th Annual International Conference on Global Health, June 13th-17th, 2011 Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington DC, USA.
Four representatives from AWC participated in the 38th Annual International Conference on Global Health, June 13th-17th 2011at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington DC, USA. These included Hajiya Aisha Sanusi, Dr. Rahila Garba, Dr. Badia Sani Bello (Co-Founder) and Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Yola. They were hosted by Mrs. Hajara Mdurvwa (Co-Founder) with the help of other AWC supporters in the Washington DC area, namely Mrs. Hassana Bello and Hajiya Raiya Bello Ringim. Special thanks goes to Hajiya Maryam Yakubu for organizing the trip for our participants.

The representatives participated in many discussions on this year’s most challenging global health policy questions like:
- What will be the fate of global health funding in the next fiscal year during this shifting political and budgetary environment?How can health systems address the growing threat of drug resistance?
- What are the challenges in implementing the U.S. Global Health Initiative?
- How will policymakers confront the growing epidemic of non‐communicable diseases?
They also attended other Global Health policy track symposia like:
- Taking the U.S. Global Health Initiative to the Country Level.
- Addressing the policy implications of drug resistance.
- Advocacy Day.

AWC Projects awaiting Funding
1. Community Health Outreach (Abuja)
AWC “Abuja Market Women Health Screening” Program is an initiative that will provide free health screenings for hundreds of market women right where they trade (Fish Market in Jabi and Monday market in Garki, Abuja). The program willscreen between 100 and 200 patients once a month. Each month, participants will be screened for a variety of medical issues ranging from routine healthy checkups to hypertension, diabetes, obesity, asthma and malnutrition.
2. AWC Community Health Education (Yola)
AWC health education teaching sessions will be held for patients every month as they wait to be seen in two major hospitals, covering such topics as water purification, hand washing to prevent disease, and proper dental care, personal hygiene, nutrition and the importance of vitamins supplement.
FRUSTRATION
The sad part of this exercise is when we have to turn people away because we do not have enough to go round. Sad isn’t it?
